Primary conflicts of interest: Alastair D Hay is currently a member of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation Funding Committee (2019–present) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Managing Common Infections Committee (2016–present).
